Welcome to the webpage of DFMC, the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at Universitat de Barcelona.

DFMC is fully committed to two important missions: the higher education of future scientists and the advancement of knowledge through top quality scientific research.

The scientific expertise of DFMC researchers covers almost all disciplines within condensed matter physics, including statistical and nonlinear physics, solid state physics and materials science, complexity and data science, soft condensed matter and biophysics. Methodological approaches are also rich and varied, including theory, experiments and numerical simulations.

The department was officially created in February 2016. Still in its infancy, it shows enormous potentialities. DFMC is currently formed by 38 tenured staff: 15 full professors –including one Icrea Senior and three Icrea Academia professors— and 21 associate professors. DFMC staff in 2017 includes also 10 postdoctoral researchers and 14 PhD students, funded from various grants and contracts. Technical and administrative support to research and teaching is finally provided by 5 full-time and 4 part-time people.

The department currently houses 10 fully operating research labs, devoted to different lines of experimental research, and a powerful cluster of CPUs for massive computation. Researchers in the department have established also a large network of active international collaborations.

Many researchers of the department are also members of the university research institutes IN2UB (Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at UB) or UBICS (University of Barcelona Institute of Complex Systems). Several keep also fruitful scientific collaborations with research institutes of the CERCA network such as IBEC (Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia) and CRM (Centre de Recerca Matemàtica).
